Chocolate cake is one of the most popular desserts all around the globe, often present in celebrations such as weddings, birthday parties, and anniversaries.
It was popularized by the end of the 19th century, and now throughout the decades there have been several types of chocolate cake varieties produced, making it a favorite of those with a sweet tooth.
Some common varieties of chocolate cake are the following:
- Molten chocolate cake – Also called a lava cake, this type makes use of a flourless cake and has a liquid chocolate center that spills open when you cut the cake open.
- Black forest cake – Prepared with lots of whipped cream, chocolate shavings, and cherries on top, the Black forest cake consists of several layers of delicious chocolate. Some European recipes also make use of alcohol in the recipe such as rum.
- Devil’s food cake - A variety of chocolate cake that is more airy and softer than other versions, with a rich chocolate flavor and whipped cream on top.
Although there are many ways to bake a delicious chocolate cake, recipes usually include sugar, eggs, cocoa powder, baking soda, salt, water, milk, and butter.
Other varieties will involve the use of other flavorings for the chocolate cake, such as coconuts, nuts, vanilla, cherries, fruit juice, liqueur, and caramel. For those who prefer the bittersweet taste of dark chocolate, this can also be substituted.
Good chocolate cake also has certain characteristics however they are made: they are not dry, but rather should be moist, fluffy, and light.
Its chocolate flavor should be rich and evident, but not too sweet. When baking, it also helps to use the best quality ingredients to bring out the excellent flavor and texture in the finished product.
If you want to try baking your own traditional chocolate cake, here’s a delicious recipe for you:
2 Cups sugar
2 tsp baking soda
2 tsp baking powder
2 ¾ cup flour
½ cup cocoa (brand of your choice)
¼ tsp salt
2 cups boiling water
2/3 cup oil
1 tsp of vanilla essence
Mix all the dry ingredients for the chocolate cake first in a bowl; then add the oil, eggs, and vanilla essence. Beat all the ingredients well, and then add two cups of boiling water until they form one mixture.
Use a baking tin which you have greased with some butter, and use some paper as well. Pour the mixture onto the tin. Place this into the oven, which you will bake at 180 degrees Celsius for 1 – 1 ¼ hour.
After 50 minutes has passed, use a skewer to test the chocolate cake. If it is clean, your delicious cake is ready to be removed from the oven and enjoyed.
Use icing if you please, and if you are serving this at a party you can add delicious finishing touches such as shavings of your favorite delectable chocolate.
